Barbie’s New Body: Tall, Petite, and Curvy
Mattel’s mission to reframe the typical Barbie and move away from growing public sentiment that the blonde, buxom doll represents everything wrong with gender stereotypes has reached its peak, with a new collection of the 57-year-old toy created in four body types: tall, curvy, petite, and the original shape.
Even better, the new dolls—which areactualBarbies, not Skippers or satellite friends—are fully customizable, so you can choose from a range of skin tones and hair and eye colors. Buyers can also opt for a flat-footed Barbie, if heels aren’t your thing.
The dolls couldn’t come at a better moment. AsTimepointed out, American beauty ideals have evolved, and bodies that belong to women like Kim Kardashian,Beyoncé,andChristina Hendrickshave become covetable, “while millennial feminist leaders likeLena Dunhamare deliberately baring their un-Barbie-like figures onscreen, fueling a movement that promotes body acceptance.” The magazine also highlighted the fact that it’s important to the generation of women having kids today to purchase what they perceive as more empowering toys for their daughters.
The dolls will be sold at Barbie.com until March 1, then they’ll be available in stores.
